Our History
The Love Coach Academy teaches specific tools and practices that support healthy relationships. These skills are cultivated through online courses and occasional live events, including retreats. The Love Coach Academy has brought together leading relationship coaches from around the world, as well as training new coaches.
The Love Coach Academy (aka: LCA) was founded in July of 2012 by Scott Catamas and Katrina Vaillancourt.
Scott has spent his adult life exploring communication and relationships. He has won multiple EMMY awards as a writer, director and producer of Educational Television.
In 2001, he was hired by the Center for Nonviolent Communication (aka: NVC) to produce a series of videos with Dr. Marshall Rosenberg.

Scott and Katrina met in 2005 and in 2006, she began co-facilitating NVC workshops with him throughout the Bay Area. Scott quickly became a popular nationwide teacher as Katrina immersed herself thoroughly in NVC community for the next seven years, applying the tools to very successfully heal her relationship with her son and ex-husband.
Together, Scott and Katrina inspired hundreds of couples throughout California as Scott’s outreach touched thousands nationwide.
- As the years went by, Scott created several new tools and practices to complement some of the teachings of Marshall and NVC.
He named his package of materials Compassionate Connections. Katrina created tools to make the foundations of NVC easily accessible for beginners.
Her most popular tools are NVC in a Nutshell and the Love Smart Cards, both of which continue to be used extensively by Love Coach Academy coaches and students.
In November of 2011, Scott’s Beloved wife Gabriele passed away, quite suddenly, from a catastrophic brain tumor. After a period of mourning, he dedicated his life to sharing the tools of Compassionate Communication that had served his marriage so well.
In July 2012 Scott and Katrina led their first official Love Coach Academy retreat in Lake County, CA.
Love Coach Academy quickly grew, hosting quarterly retreats in the Bay Area and in California, then expanding to include online offerings. At one such retreat in November of 2013, Scott met Emily Orum. There was an instant soul recognition, and they began teaching together soon after.
- Emily brought her profound understanding of self-care to the partnership. This complemented Scott’s teachings about care and compassion for others.
- Emily also brought her background of sound healing and embodied self-sourcing into the teachings.
